LINCOLN, NE — Nebraska corn farmers, through the Nebraska Corn Board and
Nebraska Corn Growers Association, created one award winning campaign that
reached out to Nebraskans in 2009 and supported another that targeted
policymakers in Washington.
Nebraskans in and around Lincoln may have caught sight of a number of delivery
trucks that were part of the “Sustaining Innovation” campaign that the two
groups kicked off in June 2009. The trucks were present throughout Lincoln and
one even appeared in the University of Nebraska Homecoming parade.
Decked out in important messages that highlight how farmers are producing more
corn with less, the truck designs won first place in the billboard/outdoor ads
category at the National Agri-Marketing Association’s Region II Best of NAMA
“Messages on the trucks really brought home the fact that corn farmers are
responsible stewards and strive every year to grow more corn with fewer inputs,”
said Elgin Bergt, a farmer from Schuyler and member of the Nebraska Corn Growers
Association. “We’re growing five times more corn today than in the 1930s, but on
20 percent less land – and we’re doing that with less fertilizer and other
inputs than a couple of decades ago.”

To help educate Washington policymakers on farmers’ advances and innovation, the
groups partnered with organizations from nine other states and the National Corn
Growers Association to form the Corn Farmers Coalition in 2008 and began running
a campaign in 2009.
The coalition’s campaign featured targeted print, radio and Internet
advertising; production of “The Corn Fact Book;” a website, and contact with
reporters, think tanks and members of Congress. These efforts received two
awards at the Region II Best of NAMA awards program.
The Corn Farmers Coalition won first place for excellence in the public affairs
and issues management category and also received first place in the best radio
series category for educational radio messages played in a dozen states,
“The Corn Farmers Coalition was and is an outstanding way to let people in
Washington know that corn farmers use the most advanced technologies in the
world to grow more corn with fewer resources,” said Alan Tiemann, a farmer from
Seward and chairman of the Nebraska Corn Board.
“We are glad that others have recognized the quality of this effort, yet we know
we must continue to remind policymakers that our corn farmers are family farmers
and some of the most productive in the world,” he said. “Farmers today face many
challenges on different fronts and we must tell our story.”

The Nebraska Corn Growers Association is a grassroots commodity organization
that works to enhance the profitability of corn producers. Now in its 37th year
of service to its members, NeCGA has more than 2,000 dues paying members in
Nebraska. NeCGA is affiliated with the NCGA, which has more than 35,000 dues
paying members nationwide.
The Nebraska Corn Board is a self-help program, funded and managed by
Nebraska corn farmers. Producers invest in the program at a rate of 1/4 of a
cent per bushel of corn sold. Nebraska corn checkoff funds are invested in
programs of market development, research and education.
